“Para Ecuador, Con Amor”
Karla Quiñonez León is a contemporary artist born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and currently based in London. Guayaquil, a vibrant city on the coast of Ecuador, is clearly her source of inspiration for this exhibition. Through her work, she hopes to showcase the diverse culture Ecuador has to offer, particularly in the realms of art and tradition.
This exhibition, “Para Ecuador, Con Amor,” revolves around themes of culture, South America, family, tradition, and folklore stories. It reflects her personal experience growing up in a varied household in Ecuador, with a Native Ecuadorian mother and an Afro-Ecuadorian father. A central theme in the exhibition is the struggles she faced with having hair that was not accepted by society, a challenge that ultimately led her to fall in love with hair as an art form.
The public will be transported and feel the warmth of Ecuador through a mixed media presentation, including images, projectors, South American music, and hair sculptures. “Para Ecuador, Con Amor” is a love letter to the artist’s country and a reflection on how being South American has shaped her into the artist she is today.
