Project Description

This work is inspired by a phenomenon called “human buckeroo” which happens when your friend falls asleep and everyone starts balancing things on him/her body, trying to get it as high as possible. And “Work Life Balance” explores this idea deeper by giving it a character, an office worker. On top of this office worker’s head is stacked with many office-related objects, creating this almost impossible structure. With just the slightest touch it looks like it’s going to fall.

I decided to choose an office worker because of the Asian work culture and how much pressure it can put on someone. The term “work life balance” has been around more and more after COVID, as people start to realise there’s life outside of work, finding the balance between work and life, hence the idea.

“Work Life Balance” carries out a dreamlike atmosphere and with the sculpture/installation-like object balanced on the head, it grabs the audience’s attention and makes them question if he’s actually balancing it on top of the head. A feeling where your friend or family member is being swamped with work and you question if they are balancing their life well.
